Spring, it feels to me, has finally arrived here at the Cabin. Things seemed to go from grey to green in a matter of a week around the Central Texas areaa. Some of the oaks are beginning to leaf out, while on others the buds look just ready to pop open.

Spring, it feels to me, has finally arrived here at the Cabin. Things seemed to go from grey to green in a matter of a week around the Central Texas areaa. Here, we are well over a month into Spring, and the green is only now beginning the dominate the color of the landscape. Some of the oaks are beginning to leaf out, while on others the buds look just ready to pop open. Lots of grasses popping up, and a variety of wildflowers add dots of color to the clumps of grass. I reckon things are smart to wake up slowly and not get too excited over the first long days of sunshine, as it can still get cold at night. Last week it was right at freezing a couple of nights, and was around -2C one night.

While sitting out writing this, two hummingbirds have flown by. They know exactly where the feeders are, or should be. Looks like the Cabin’s feeders are on their regular route. They look to come up the driveway from the road. They stop and check the bigger new feeder first, then swoop over to the smaller feeder from last year, then zoom off to the northwest in the direction of V&M’s.

The hummingbird feeders are currently empty. The new one the bottom pan either fell off or got knocked off. I didn’t like the way it was snapping together, it didn’t feel very secure. I will probably duct tape it closed after the next filling, but will first take a good look at how the bottom attaches to the top and make sure I’m not missing some locking tabs or something. And for right now all the feeders are empty. Their is a bird flu going around and it is advised that you avoid using communal feeders and bird ponds. I have been hand feeding them some, tossing seed out in the yard. They actually seem to prefer this and like foraging around amongst the scrub oaks and other underbrush. Haven’t noticed any sickness with the birds that visit, or a reduction in their numbers. Still, will keep things empty for another couple of weeks as they have suggested in the paper.

The deer are back to passing through fairly consistently. And have gone back to their smaller group sizes. Splitear and Buster were running around together. Both have new antlers already growing back. Buster has a gnarly growth directly in front of his right eye. I noticed it during the Winter where it looked about the size of the end of your finger. It has enlarged a lot since then and I would guess that it blocks his vision when looking straight ahead. It doesn’t seem to bother him. It is now about the size of a typical mushroom, like what goes on a pizza. It is not bleeding or anything, an is a dark color like his nose or other fleshy bits.

Some new visitors to the property look to have decided to take up residence, or somewhere nearby. Two ground squirrels, both named Sandy (put photo here), have spent most of their day for the past week around the cabin and shedroom. Not sure how I feel about this. My experience with Texas squirrels has not been the best. They tend to find opportunities to get into structures, and build nests in crawl spaces, chew on wires and in general are nuisances. I don’t know much about Colorado ground squirrels, so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and see how they integrate with the rest of the critters. So far they have been on good behavior, and the other animals don’t seem to give them any more mind than to do one another already. The ground squirrels just seem so big compared to the little chipmunks. I’m afraid they are going to eat too much of what I put toss out for all the others. I have already seen them after I recently scattered some seed in the frontyard with their cheeks stuffed. Stuffed to the point where bulge of their cheeks is the size of one of the chipmunks. So I don’t know, will have to keep an eye on them. I wouldn’t do anything to hurt them, but I’m sure there are ways to encourage them to find elsewhere to live.

[Update: a few days later]
As feared, at least one Sandy looked to be making a nest under the Shedroom. I had heard some noises toward the back of the room one day, and then spooked one coming out of the Cabin. I saw it head to the back of the Shedroom. Went I got around to the back I could just see some grey tail hairs just inside. When I next had some time, and after making sure nothing was under the Shedroom, I put some rocks around edges of the panel that closes the back end of the crawlspace. I checked the next day, and they had tried to dig around the rocks. Placed some more rocks. This seems to have kept them at bay, and I haven’t seen any more signs of trying to get under the Shedroom. I have seen the squirrels since then, so I reckon they have found them a new spot. We’ll see if they decide to stick around.

This Black-headed Grosbeak was identified today. I mentioned seeing him in the last post, but wasn’t sure what it was. I found him in the iBird app. They migrate to Mexico for the Winter, so this is my first confirmed sighting of a migratory bird returning this year.

Lots of little things going on keeping me busy, but nothing of note worthy of a post. Catching up from the past couple of weeks goings on.
On the critter front:
Chuck and Susu have finally woken up fully and have been scurrying about. They have been spending more time around the Shedroom than before Winter. I put them some seeds out today on the porch. I can get some good close looks at them now, with the hope of actually being able to tell the difference between the two (or maybe more for that matter).

The deer have shown up a couple of times over the past couple of weeks, so I guess they haven’t completely moved off. One day it was kinda the full herd, maybe 6 or so. The next time was just a single. I’m still putting some food out every few days in case they stop by.

One new bird has shown up in the last few days. I haven’t identified it yet. I would describe it as a very “woodsy” bird. Shaped a bit like, and about the size of, a pigeon, but a very pretty tawny brown on top, with black and white checks on its wingtips. Haven’t seen one like it since last fall. And today when working in the yard I think I heard a hummingbird. I had been negligent and hadn’t made up any nectar. So I made up a batch, and filled the feeder from last year, and almost completely filled the new larger feeder. That was with a batch of 4 cups water and 1 cup of sugar. Going forward 5 cups of water and 1 1/4 cups of sugar should fill both feeders completely. Or 1 cup of water and 1/4 cup of sugar for the small, and the 4 cup recipe for the large. Looking forward to attempting to get some good pics/videos of the hummingbirds with the nice tripod I got for Xmas. Overall though, the bird activity around the front yard has been pretty quiet. Particularly the little juncos and finches and such are busy elsewhere. There are some around throughout the day, but not in the numbers I was seeing during the middle of Winter. The jays too, are usually off somewhere else most of the day. They aren’t far off though, and can hear and see them off in the distance.

Weather-wise:

The snow is still not quite done. It has snowed a little a few times. Nothing that stays around, and usually doesn’t even show on the ground. Had one day that covered everything in white early in the morning, but it was soon gone. Even just yesterday and today there were a few little flakes, and some graupel.

It has also been really windy the last few weeks. Like nearly everyday it has been windy, especially in the afternoons. Most wind I have seen since being here, and the most constant. Just a steady wind all day. Some days really gusty too. The wind really gets to me. It will turn a lovely sunny day into something I don’t want to be out in.

Temps have been nice. I had the past week off, and the first part of the week was really nice, and not as breezy. Highs in the upper 60s. Still can get pretty chilly at night, on occasion down to freezing or just below. But typically in the 30s or 40s and I have been able to spend my nights in the Shedroom. My back is certainly appreciating getting to sleep in my bed again instead of the not so comfortable couch (it’s ok for a night or two, but it was taking a toll on my back after many successive nights).

Other Notes:

Did some Spring cleaning in the Shedroom and rearranged it a bit. I had had the bed lengthwise against the back wall. This gave more room, but it made making the bed tough, and the more annoying thing is that the covers would tend to want to fall of the bed on the side not against the wall when turning over or moving around at night. So at worst I would wake up cold with half the covers off, or at best end up with a tangled mess. I moved the bed so the head of the bed is against the back wall. This allows me to easily to get at each side of the bed, and the covers stay on as they should. This also allowed me to move the Poang chair to one side of the bed and the night table to the other. I will have to swap the bed and the chair positions once Winter returns and I get wood burning stove installed. Should still have room to get to each side of the bed.

Got a library card. I didn’t look around too much at the whole library. It is fairly small but well laid out and seems sell stocked. I was interested in local history and flora and fauna. They have a whole section concerning that that looks to be from a local’s personal collection that was donated. One small spiral bound book, that looks almost like a research had some great information. The author had found broken spear points and arrow heads and other tools in the valley down the hill from me that indicate folks were living around here 10,000 years ago.

Cleaned up the area underneath the Pondersosas between the Cabin and the Shedroom. I can now hang a hammock (or two) out there as well as my camp chair and a small table. That area stays shady and cool throughout the day and I plan on working out there as things warm up.

The deer seemed to have moved on. I read that they will move to higher ground as the Spring progresses. I haven’t seen them in almost a week. And the last piles of food I put out have gone uneaten (I guess the birds don’t care for it). The last time I saw them was when we got that last bit of snow. I thought it was because of the snow, but perhaps that was coincidence, and they were on the move, because all the groups I have observed over the Winter were together.

I guess 10 or 12 in total. I noticed that Splitear had lost his antlers. I almost didn’t recognize him, but got a good look at his split ear and the scar on his right flank. One lone female did come by a day or so later. She didn’t stay long, poked around a little bit then moved on.

I have seen both Susu and Chuck. I hope I get to see some babies!

No new birds seen yet. Plan on making up some hummingbird nectar this weekend. I will fill up the smaller one first and once I get some activity there I will hang the new larger one.

First Camping Trip

Went on my first camping trip here in Colorado a couple of weekends ago. Got invited by a friend I have met up here, J, and his dog, P, to join them. J lives just down the hill from me, about 15 minutes away down a very rough Indianland road. From there, and this was the coolest part, we hiked out from his place, crossed 160 about 10 minutes later, and then headed up a wide, well maintained county/forest road.

We hiked along it as it made its way up a small valley. J had been out this way before and had a general idea of where we were heading. After about 45 minutes to hour up the road J had us turn off where a creek crossed under the road. Here is where we really began hiking.

For me, this was the coolest part, not the hiking, I mean that was super cool and more on that in a bit, but the fact that we were now in the San Juan National Forest
, no need for a reservation, no line to wait through, no permits, and best of all, no other people. I would never have thought to just hike into the woods. But why not? It’s public lands, it is just as much mine as anyone else. A very new experience for me, where it seems like everywhere in Texas is owned by someone, and even in the State parks you can only go so far before you run into someone’s fence. Looking forward to getting know my little corner of the 1.8 million acres that make up the forest.

So we head up a vague game trail that ran along the creek. We followed this until things opened up a bit and then just trailblazed along the creek. We continued along until we came to J’s camp, where he and P had spent the night. After looking things over a bit, we decided this area was a bit tight for two. It was still pretty wet from the recent snow melting (and there was still plenty of snow still around), and what was dry was uneven. J packed up his tent real quick, and we continued on up the creek. Within 10 or 15 minutes we found a big, relatively flat, area surrounded by trees and sitting up above creek. We set up camp here.

That night we had a nice campfire.

It had got chilly during the night. My Texas-weight gear is not sufficient for this climate. I’ll be upgrading pieces as the year goes along. First thing a new quilt. My feet got pretty cold. And, to be honest, I didn’t really configure the tent well. I hadn’t used it in a while and forgot about closing the end vents, and setting the poles a bit lower so the breeze couldn’t get in as well. AND I also hadn’t used my quilt in cold weather in a good bit and didn’t configure it as well as I could have. Still, even with everything setup perfect, the quilt is only rated for 0 Celsius. Same for the sleep pad, although I got the light version mainly for the weight (when I thought pack-rat me could go ultra-light).

The next morning I saw my first butterfly, or maybe a moth?

After breakfast we slowly packed and cleaned up. Then leaving the packs at camp, we went and explored the general area. We went further up the hill/mountain. Got up high enough to see Broke Off point across from us (and which is not far from the cabin). We then made our way down, heading further up the creek. Once back at creek level we crossed it and explored around on that side. Another first for me, we found a stand of aspens. I really like those trees, and they remind me of the birch in Vermont. Which reminds me of my hike along the Long Trail, which started everything that led to me standing in a forest in Colorado staring at an aspen tree.

It was getting later in the afternoon, and still had some walking to do to get back home, plus the sun is intense up here, and I could feel I was starting to get too much of it. So we made our way back to camp, retrieved our packs and started the hike back.

Was a great introduction to hiking/camping in Colorado and right in my own backyard. Grateful to J for turning me on to the idea of just hiking into the forest. I had definitely been wanting to do some hikes but was not looking forward with trying to make reservations and all that goes with that. To be able to go on a whim for a day or an overnighter is a freeing feeling. I so often talk myself out doing things like that with the idea of having to deal with people and bureaucracy.

Got a dusting of snow early this morining. Just enough to turn the bare ground white again.
It warmed up quickly as soon as the sun got above the trees, and whatever had fallen was gone by
noon. Late in the afternoon got some rain for just a spell. Been a while since I have seen rain.
There was a bit of graupel
mixed in with it.

Not many critters around today. Forgot to mention found some tufts of feathers from a Stellar jay,
like something had gotten it. Maybe that has everyone spooked? More likely they are taking advantage of
all the newly exposed ground to do some foraging. Or starting on the collection of materials and starting
on nest building.

The deer have gotten a bit full of themselves. Over the last couple of weeks they’ve destroyed one bird feeder, and I have had to rearrange the remaining feeders. I had already hung all the feeders because they were emptying them in one night when left on the stumps. Even then, they weren’t up high enough.

The deer have gotten a bit full of themselves. Over the last couple of weeks they’ve destroyed one
bird feeder, and I have had to rearrange the remaining feeders. I had already hung all the feeders
because they were emptying them in one night when left on the stumps. Even then, they weren’t up high
enough. I caught a couple on the camera rearing up on their hind legs trying to get at the bird feed.
I didn’t actually see the deer break the bird feeder, but it makes sense that they were trying to get
at the seed and knocked it off the branch it was hanging on. Being so cold recently, and a few years
of Texas sun, I’m sure the plastic was brittle. So the whole bottom of the feeder broke off.

Oh, and then I had a big plastic feeder shaped like a red barn. It held eight pounds of seed, so was
only requiring filling once a week. It sat on the big stump in the front yard. The deer pushed it off
the stump and it busted apart as well. And finally, they almost got the big metal milk pail feeder off
the branch it was on.

So I hung them all up higher today. I can just get them all on and off their hanging branches without a
ladder. Hoping that will keep the birds fed, and the deer from breaking more things.

Concerning the deer, it seems that Splitear is the leader of the group he hangs with. The group
consists of him, another male, Buster and a female or two. I haven’t found a way to distinguish the
females yet, so don’t have any names for them. There are also an adolescent or two on occasion that I’m
guessing are the females young from last year. Splitear is a bit of an ass and runs everyone else off
from the feed. I’ve taken to putting out small patches of feed instead of just filling the big bowl I had
on the stump. Otherwise, whoever got there first would eat the whole bowl.

As I continue to observe the deer, Splitear is more and more a bully, and really all the deer are
aggressive towards one another when it comes to food. I guess that is just nature, and timidity is not
going to keep your belly full. Split runs off the biggest female, who in-turn, chases off the smaller
female, and everyone runs off the little teeenagers.

The gals get along a little better, and accommodate the younger ones, like the spike in the viddy below.
The group below are different from Splitear and his crew, and has more young with them.

Chuck and Susu – The two chipmunks made a brief appearance just before the last big snow. One did look
a little plumper than I remember. Perhaps we’ll have some baby chippers blitzing around this Spring. But the
cameras have also been catching two or three cats prowling around at night. I’m hoping they are not having
any luck in locating the chipmunks burrow(s).

Spring – I’m finally getting around to writing this section about Spring just in time for the Vernal
Equinox tomorrow. After my first real winter I now have a much greater appreciation, and understanding, of
all the festivals, rituals and traditions associated with Spring. I know how appreciative I have felt as the
days have gotten longer, the days and nights not as cold, and the snow leaving much quicker. Things start to
get easier; having to get dressed less to go outside or make a trip to the privy, not spending a full minute
scraping at your boots to come back inside, snow that falls will melt on its own, and countless other things
that just took more time when snow and ice are everywhere. And I’ve never been more cognizant of the seasons
changing. The earth has wobbled enough now so that the sun clears the big trees around midday, allowing the
solar panels to get full sun from early morning until late afternoon. The ground is thawing out. It feels so
soft walking on it. And so quiet compared to the constant crunch and scrape of the snow and ice. A close look
around the ground will find little dots of green.

But definitely still in the very early stages of things waking up. Maybe some of the big Ponderosas look a bit
more green, but all the scrub oak and brush is still fast asleep. Also no new wildlife showing up, only the
same Winter friends I have had all season; the tiny juncos of various varieties, the one or two little
woodpeckers, a few nut hatches, and the band of Stellar jays.

The snow stayed spotty all day yesterday. The sky would darken up, and the snow would come down heavy for a bit. Then things would slack off, and sometimes even blue sky could be seen, before another round of snow would come through.
The wind, however, rarely let up. It was the highest winds I have seen since being here, and definitely the longest, sustained winds. There were times throughout the day when even around the cabin was windy, and again, those winds were the greatest I’ve so far experienced.

The snow stayed spotty all day yesterday. The sky would darken up, and the snow would come down heavy for a bit.
Then things would slack off, and sometimes even blue sky could be seen, before another round of snow would come through.

The wind, however, rarely let up. It was the highest winds I have seen since being here, and definitely the longest,
sustained winds. There were times throughout the day when even around the cabin was windy, and again, those winds
were the greatest I’ve so far experienced. I’m guessing it was the wind that kept the snow spotty, and didn’t let
any one particular shower stick around. By the end of the day I had maybe accumulated 4 to 4.5 cm of snow.

Once night fell, the wind died down a bit. Just looking out the front door, in the porchlight, it didn’t look like
it was snowing at all. Look again in 5 or 10 minutes, and things looked more filled in, edges were smoothed out.
Outside you could feel the tiny flakes, more like pellets, but not ice. That kept up until I went to bed around
midnight. It looks to have continued through most of the night. My tracks from the last pee of the night were
completely filled in this morning.

Had a shower or two of snow this morning. I cleared the solar panels of the night’s snow. The sun came out not too
long later, and it was cold -3c or so, but sunny most of the rest of the day. The sky was really clear, and I made
1.39kwH of power today. I saw 25 amps going into the batteries at one point, which I think is the highest I have
noted. All together, I probably got 12-15 cm of snow, most of it coming last night. That’s about half of what I was
expecting. Supposed to be warm the next couple of days, so hope some leaves on its own, but still will
have some work over the next days so that I can get out of the driveway easily in Sparky.

Animalwise, the deer have taken to the mineral block, and it is showing signs of use. Feeding them out by the lick
hasn’t kept them from coming in around the cabin, but they don’t seem to stick around as long, or poke around quite
as much. They also like that 12% sweet feed. It wasn’t too expensive for a 50 pound bag. I’m going to get a
critter container for the feed, and leave it out by the mineral lick. That will make feeding easier, and can also
toss some out on the ground for grazing.

The Snow Is Slow

Snow has been spotty, and slow in arriving today. I guess that is not necessarily a bad thing. The morning started off as I would have expected, with the snow coming down at a good and steady rate. I estimate I got a couple of centimeters of snow during that shower. Then things slacked off about mid-morning. It snowed off and on throughout the rest of the day. Enough to accumulate another centimeter or so.

slacked off about mid-morning. It snowed off and on throughout the rest of the day. Enough to accumulate another
centimeter or so.

The little birds were out all day, regardless of snow. I feed them throughout the day. Late in the afternoon, one
of the chipmunks showed up for a bit. And a little later than that, just before dark, Splitear and a couple of
other male companions came by. They seem to enjoy the mineral block, and each one took a turn at it for a few minutes.
Splitear gets a bit defensive and will tire of the others at times and make a mock charge at the others to run them
off.

The new battery pack performed well. I got up on the ladder and cleared off the panels once the snow slacked off.
With the little bit of help from the cloud covered sun (0.5 kw/hours for the day), the batteries stayed above 13.0
volts for the course of the day. And that was with the Stealth rig running SWG all day, my work laptop plugged in
most of the day, and the TV going. Pretty satisfied.

More snow on the way
Blowing in right now, no snow yet, but some of the highest winds I have experienced yet. Fortunately the cabin sits in a protected spot. So at ground level I don’t experience much wind. But I can hear it whipping through the trees. From the forecasts I am expecting close to 10 inches of snow over the next coupla three days.
In other news: I received the new battery, and installed it Sunday.

More snow on the way

Blowing in right now, no snow yet, but some of the highest winds I have experienced yet. Fortunately the cabin sits
in a protected spot. So at ground level I don’t experience much wind. But I can hear it whipping through the trees.
From the forecasts I am expecting close to 10 inches of snow over the next coupla three days.

In other news:
I received the new battery, and installed it Sunday. So far so good. It performed well last night and the rate of
discharged seemed greatly improved. They also did well today with cloudy weather, even with me having the gaming rig
going, the work laptop charging and the TV on, I didn’t have to run the generator until well into the evening. I
gave the batteries a two charge, and we’ll see how they hold up the rest of the night, and deal with probably no
sun tomorrow.

I was correct in thinking Splitear had told the ladies about the eats around the cabin. He was back with a lady
friend the next night, and has brought a few more over.

But he wasn’t discrete enough, and now there is are quite
a few coming back each day/night. They’ve kinda have become a problem. They clued in on the bird feeders, and emptied
both of them in one night, almost 15 pounds of seed. Plus the males are clumsy with their antlers and knock the feeders
off their stands, and have even come up close to the cabin and knocked over things.

So I picked up a mineral block, and some general animal feed, and set those up away from the cabin. Hoping they will
be happy with that and tend to stay away a bit. Until then I will hand feed the birds each day. Once the snow has passed
I will relocate the feeders to where the deer can’t get to them.

Finally, the chipmunks are still staying burrowed up for the most part, or are spending time in other parts of the
property, as I have only seen them on occasion. And just one at a time.

Two deer ladies got caught on the cameras last night. Splitear maybe told them about the easy feeding over here at the cabin to garner some favor?
Otherwise a typical day. It was really nice out, and relatively warm. Saw the one loner chipmunk today. Bare ground starting to emerge. Supposed to get close to 10 celsius by the weekend. Maybe I’ll get industrious and get up on the roof and get the solar panels properly mounted.

as I just purchased a new gaming laptop. I have a feeling I’ll be spending
the weekend messing with that.

I also purchased a new battery for the solar system. I bought a twin to the
current Chins 200amp/hr battery I am currently using. The price has come down
about 200 bucks from when I purchsed the first one back around August. I
need to increase capacity and I have been real happy with the current one.
Wanted to be able to get match while they are still available.

Need to get a workflow going to get images taken on the phone available for
easy access from my laptops, where I do most of this blogging. It would be
nice to be able to include some fotos and stoof to this wall of text.

Catching up on happenings around the cabin for the past week or so.
It snowed pretty good the first part of last week. Got ~6 inches of snow, very light and dry. This made for cleaning up the paths around the cabin easy. Fifteen minutes of effort had the porch area and the paths back in shape. And while I didn’t need to get out to get anywhere, I also tackled the driveway.

It snowed pretty good the first part of last week. Got ~6 inches of snow, very light and dry. This made for cleaning
up the paths around the cabin easy. Fifteen minutes of effort had the porch area and the paths back in shape. And
while I didn’t need to get out to get anywhere, I also tackled the driveway. I’m glad I did. The snow cleared just as
easily as around the cabin. I think had I waited until stuff had started the melt/refreeze cycle it would have been
much tougher. An hour after work for the two days following the snow had the driveway clear.

The chipmunks, Chuck and Susu, made an appearance during the day before the snow started. I reckon they knew
what was coming and were replenishing their stores. I haven’t seen them since the snow. The other single chipmunk, as
yet unamed, has been out a couple of times since the snow. In other critter news, Splitear the deer

has been coming by on a near daily basis. He eats whatever seed the birds have left around. I bought some apples and
carrots, and have been giving him a few of those each day. I also picked up a bag of peanuts, but he doesn’t care for
them, and will eat around them. If there is nothing else left he will eat a few, but will leave some uneaten. The
Stellar Jays enjoy them though, so they aren’t going to waste. They grab one and take off with it. I have found
some empty shells under a nearby tree.

Back to Splitear. He has had some friends come around with him on occasion. Not sure if they are just follwing him over,
or if he is brining them. I have seen him do a little fake charge at some of them to run them off. There is one other
he seems to tolerate better. Matcher (he has a nice set of matched antlers) has come by the last couple of days
along with Splitear. Yesterday he also returned on his own later in the day. Then last night an adult male and female
brought a couple of teenagers along with them. I couldn’t tell if it was Matcher, definitely wasn’t Splitear, and will
have to look at the camera footage closer to see if it was maybe him.

Weather has been nice during the day since the snow, but it has been really cold at night. The battery has enjoyed all
the sun. I might just be imagining this, but the battery seems to perform better when charged all day from the panels
rather than charging off the generator.
